Kapiti Women's Triathlon

The 35th Kapiti Women’s Triathlon was held earlier today at Marine Gardens.
This morning, local women from all over Kapiti and further afield headed to Raumati Beach to swim, bike and run. The What’s On Kapiti Team went along to take photos and report on the fun.

Kapiti Women's Triathlon

”It’s a really special event, because it’s about taking part, and it’s about stepping out of your comfort zone. And coming across the line and doing your best personal time is what you’re after”, said announcer Andrea Kaye. “The event is just phenomenal. What it gives to the women and the girls that take part…”

The iconic events began in 1983 with the aim of encouraging Kapiti women to get out there and have fun whilst also keeping fit. It is put on by community groups, local businesses and volunteers. The event has a community atmosphere with hundreds of spectators cheering on the women as they compete. This year, spot prizes were available, donated by sponsors such as Biking Mad, Interislander and Raumati Sands Resort among others.
Competitors were of all ages and abilities. There were a dozen over 70s, and many children and teenagers competed too. There were even mother-daughter-granddaughter teams, and one woman came the whole way from the American state of Kansas.

Many women run competitively, while others run just for the fun. For Andrea Kaye, it’s all about challenging yourself.
“It’s not about winning. It’s about being the best that you can be, as an individual. So every individual that takes part can take something away from it.”
Preliminary results will be up on the Kapiti Women’s Triathlon website tomorrow, with final results confirmed later this week.

Special thanks to the volunteers and local businesses who ran the event.
